In the face of tragedy, Antigone struggles to give her brother the burial he deserves – but at what cost to herself?

Creon, King of Thebes, has forbidden that burial and promised death to anyone who disobeys him. Will Antigone pay the ultimate price for her disobedience?

This premiere - coming just as UK venues were allowed to host performances again during the Covid-19 pandemic - was conducted by Matthew Hardy and saw mezzo-soprano Rosie Middleton in the title role. Ben Smith was at the piano and a chorus of three was made up from talented singers from King’s College London (KCL) and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

Composer Edward Nesbit, who is a member of the music faculty at KCL and at that time was composer-in-residence at QMUL, has been commissioned by ELMG on several occasions.

The performance took place at The Space Theatre in the Isle of Dogs and the performance was funded by KCL and QMUL.
