Bold and Beautiful: A Concert of New Music

A crucial part of East London Music Group’s work has involved community collaborations in our area, performing alongside children, university students, and local amateur musicians. This project was developed and performed in collaboration with CoMA London Ensemble and performed at Queen Mary University of London. Leading the performance was conductor Matthew Hardy, CoMA London Ensemble Music Director and ELMG Artistic Director.

Composer Lloyd Coleman was commissioned to write a piece for CoMA London Ensemble and East London Music Group players together; the resulting work, entitled Contemplation, was scored in CoMA’s Open Score format. Also commissioned was Effy Efthymiou, whose piece Bird With A Wolf Heart, written for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, bassoon, trombone, and cello.

Two other premieres were included in the programme: Hold / / Burst by Matthew Gilley, Chair of CoMA London Ensemble, and Oceans by Joseph Pickhard, who was at the time a trumpet and composition student at Trinity Laban Junior Department.

Alongside these new pieces were repeat performances of ELMG’s previous commissions: : Insert Expletive Here : by Ella Jarman-Pinto, Strange Joy by Edward Nesbit, The Phoenix Fanfare by Leo Geyer. Rounding out the programme were works by Howard Jones, Joanna Bailie, Hannah kendall, and Eleanor Alberga.
